Windows System Resource Manager setup guide
This setup guide provides necessary information and step-by-step instructions that you can use to install Windows System Resource Manager.
It is important to read the information and instructions before you install Windows System Resource Manager.
You can install the Windows System Resource Manager server component only on 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, Enterprise Edition and Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition.
You can install the client component only on x86-based computers. The client component supports Windows XP, the Windows Server 2003 family, and Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2 or later.
- Windows System Resource Manager has the same minimum CPU and memory requirements as the version of Windows on which it is installed. For more information about Windows system requirements, see the documentation for your version of Windows.
- Windows System Resource Manager requires a hard-disk partition or volume with 22.5 megabytes (MB) of free space. To use the Windows System Resource Manager accounting features, you must have at least 50 MB of free space on the volume where you set the accounting database.

If you uninstall Windows System Resource Manager, all resource-allocation policies, process-matching criteria, calendar data, and accounting data are deleted as part of the uninstallation process. To keep these files or data, you must back them up to another location.

Caution
-
Cancelling the installation during the upgrade process can produce unexpected results. For example, the Windows System Resource Manager service might be stopped, or the Windows System Resource Manager entry in Add or Remove Programs might be incorrect. You should not interrupt the upgrade process unless there is a critical reason to do so.
- When you perform an upgrade, if Unicode characters are included in any Windows System Resource Manager registry entries, all corresponding settings that follow the first instance of a Unicode character will be lost. If the settings are lost, the default values are used. The settings that can be affected are as follows:
- Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server name
- E-mail IDs
- Notification state
- Accounting database logging interval
- User-defined exclusion list
- Service mode (the setting that determines whether the Windows System Resource Manager service is set to managing, profiling, or calendar)
- Notification eventlist
- Active resource-allocation policy name
- Calendar default resource-allocation policy name
Important
- The release candidate version of the Windows System Resource Manager client component is incompatible with the final version of the Windows System Resource Manager server component. You must upgrade the release candidate version of the client to the final version of the client if you want to use it to manage a computer running the final version of the server component.
-
You can upgrade the release candidate of Windows System Resource Manager to the final version. However, upgrading from the beta release is not supported. If you have installed the beta release, you must uninstall it before you install the final version.
To determine whether you have installed the beta release or the release candidate, open Add or Remove Programs, click Windows System Resource Manager, and then click Click here for support information. The version number will be displayed. The beta release is version 1.0; the release candidate is version 1.2.596.1.
- On the computer on which one or more Windows System Resource Manager components are installed, open Control Panel, and then open Add or Remove Programs.
- Click Windows System Resource Manager, and then click Change.
- On the WSRM Maintenance Options page, click Repair, and then click Next.
- On the Completing the Windows System Resource Manager Maintenance Wizard page, do the following:
- If you want to start Windows System Resource Manager management immediately, select Start WSRM server management after this wizard is closed. This option is available only if you installed the server component.
- If you want to open the Windows System Resource Manager snap-in, select Start WSRM client snap-in after this wizard is closed. This option is available only if you installed the client component.
- To close the wizard, click Finish.
Notes
-
If you installed Windows System Resource Manager from a location that is not currently accessible, such as a shared network folder, when you run the repair program, it will prompt you for an installation path. If prompted, you must supply the path to the location from which you initially installed Windows System Resource Manager.
-
To repair an installation of Windows System Resource Manager, you must use the same version of Setup.exe that you used when you initially installed Windows System Resource Manager. To ensure that this occurs, use Add or Remove Programs.
You can install Windows System Resource Manager from the command line. The command-line options support unattended installation. You can also use the command-line options to specify different installed configurations of Windows System Resource Manager that are best suited to your business goals.
